Together, we’re creating the cosmetics packaging of tomorrow,
combining luxury and circularity.

The world’s first commercially produced biorecycled cosmetic bottle, available with Biotherm’s Waterlover sun mist.

Biotherm[1], a skin fitness pioneer and L’Oréal Group brand, is set to launch the world’s first fully biorecycled cosmetic bottle, designed using CARBIOS’ enzymatic PET recycling technology.

From Spring 2025, Biotherm’s iconic Waterlover sun mist will relaunch in a reinvented cosmetic bottle with a material that is five times more circular, thereby reducing its carbon footprint by 90%[2] compared to the production of a virgin plastic.

Today, most recycled plastic comes from mechanical recycling, a process that doesn’t achieve the same level of transparency, quality, creative flexibility and circularity as PET issued from CARBIOS’ biorecycling. Crystal-clear transparency, luxurious shine, customizable colors: CARBIOS r-PET enables Biotherm to push the boundaries of innovation and get one step closer to reaching fully circular plastic packaging by 2030.

Tangible proof that innovation and sustainability can go hand in hand, without compromising on quality, performance or sensory experience.

Paving the way to greater circularity with CARBIOS

From proof of concept to commercial reality

Three years of collaboration between CARBIOS and Biotherm teams have made this product a commercial reality. Throughout the bottle development process, every step was crucial: rigorous testing, fine-tuning, scaling-up phases, and validation at every phase from biorecycling PET waste to shaping the bottle. Each phase was essential in transforming this technological breakthrough into an industrial reality.

By 2021, CARBIOS and Biotherm had already unveiled a prototype bottle incorporating PET biorecycling technology in cosmetic packaging for the first time. Biotherm’s Waterlover sun lotion therefore became the world’s first beauty product packaged in a 100% biorecycled PET plastic bottle, as part of a non-commercial pilot sample. This innovation was rewarded in 2023 at the first World Alliance Summit, where CARBIOS and L’Oréal received the “Pioneer Award” from the Solar Impulse Foundation.

A sustainable partnership to improve plastic circularity

As early as 2017, CARBIOS and L’Oréal joined forces to create a consortium dedicated to the industrialization of PET enzymatic recycling technology for packaging applications. In 2019, Nestlé Waters, PepsiCo and Suntory Beverage & Food Europe, joined this initiative. The consortium members share a common mission: to deploy this disruptive technology on a large scale to accelerate the transition to a circular economy.

Faced with the need to find concrete solutions to limit plastic pollution, CARBIOS meets the expectations of consumers, brands and manufacturers with an innovative, sustainable alternative. This solution makes it possible to create premium packaging of a quality equivalent to that of petro-sourced materials.
